What is NordShield? The Biodegradable Anti-Odour Technology in APRÍshield™

New: See our full Technology hub for the complete overview of APRÍtech™ (HeiQ Mint) and APRÍshield™ (NordShield), certifications, and FAQs.

NordShield is the anti-odour technology behind APRÍ's APRÍshield™ range. While our APRÍtech™ products use HeiQ Mint (derived from peppermint), NordShield takes a distinctly Nordic approach: it's made from wood extractives, the natural antimicrobial compounds found in Scandinavian timber species.

It's a fitting technology for a Scandinavian brand — and a genuinely interesting piece of materials science worth understanding.

What Are Wood Extractives?

Trees — particularly the coniferous species dominant in Nordic forests like pine, spruce, and birch — produce natural compounds that protect them from bacteria, fungi, and environmental stressors. These are called extractives: chemical compounds that can be extracted from wood and which have functional properties outside the tree.

The specific compounds in NordShield include tannins, phenolic acids, and related compounds found in Nordic wood species. These have well-documented antimicrobial properties in nature — they're part of how trees defend themselves. NordShield's innovation is isolating, stabilising, and applying these natural properties as a durable textile treatment.

The raw materials are a byproduct of the Nordic timber and paper industry — compounds that would otherwise be treated as processing waste. NordShield converts that into functional textile technology.

How NordShield Works on Fabric

The odour from workout clothes comes from bacteria — specifically, bacteria that colonise fabric fibres and break down compounds in sweat into volatile organic compounds that create that post-workout smell. The bacteria thrive in warm, moist environments: exactly the conditions inside gym clothes during exercise.

NordShield works by making the fabric surface inhospitable to bacterial colonisation. The wood-derived phenolic compounds create an environment where odour-causing bacteria can't effectively establish and multiply. Rather than killing bacteria aggressively (as heavy metal ions do), it works through a more passive mechanism that inhibits bacterial activity — more like a natural barrier than a chemical weapon.

This distinction matters both for environmental reasons (no aggressive biocides entering waterways) and for the long-term integrity of the treatment. The wood extractives bond durably to fabric fibres during manufacturing and maintain their effectiveness across many wash cycles.

Why Biodegradable Matters

The standard critique of silver-ion anti-odour treatments is that when the ions wash out, they don't break down — they persist in the water system and in aquatic environments. Silver is toxic to many aquatic organisms at relatively low concentrations.

NordShield's wood-derived compounds are biodegradable. They break down naturally in water and soil without persistent accumulation. The compounds that eventually do wash out of the fabric are, at their origin, the same phenolic compounds found in forest runoff from natural decomposition of wood — not novel synthetic chemicals.

For a textile treatment marketed on environmental credentials, this is a meaningful difference — one that's verifiable rather than just claimed.

APRÍshield™: The Full Picture

APRÍshield™ is APRÍ's label for garments treated with NordShield. Every APRÍshield™ product is:

  • Finished with NordShield wood extractive treatment, integrated into manufacturing — not added after the fact
  • Made from lyocell or cotton base fabric, which naturally resists bacterial build-up through its smooth fibre structure and moisture management properties
  • Free from silver, zinc, heavy metals, and synthetic biocides
  • Certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (independently tested safe for direct skin contact)
  • GOTS and Bluesign compliant

The combination of naturally odour-resistant lyocell with a biodegradable wood-based treatment creates garments that stay genuinely fresh across multiple wears — tested to retain 99.9% anti-odour effectiveness after 30 wash cycles.

How It Compares to HeiQ Mint (APRÍtech™)

Both NordShield and HeiQ Mint solve the same problem through different plant-based approaches:

Factor NordShield (APRÍshield™) HeiQ Mint (APRÍtech™)
Source material Nordic wood extractives Peppermint (bio-based)
Origin Finland / Nordic forestry research Switzerland (ETH Zurich heritage)
Mechanism Inhibits bacterial colonisation Disrupts bacterial cell membranes
Heavy metals None None
PFAS / biocides None None
Biodegradable Yes Yes
Wash durability 99.9% after 30 washes 94%+ after 20 washes at 30°C

Both are genuinely plant-based, both are certified safe, and both perform comparably on the key metric that matters to anyone wearing activewear: staying fresh across multiple wears without washing. See them side-by-side on our Technology page.

The Nordic Design Philosophy

There's something coherent about a Scandinavian sportswear brand using technology derived from Nordic forests. The Scandinavian design tradition has always valued honest materials — things that are what they say they are, derived from sources you can point to, doing their job without unnecessary complexity.

NordShield fits that ethos precisely: a textile finish that works because the compounds in Nordic wood species have been doing this job in nature for thousands of years, now applied in a way that makes activewear genuinely better without compromising the environment it came from.

The Bottom Line

NordShield is APRÍ's Nordic-rooted answer to activewear odour: wood-derived, biodegradable, free from heavy metals, and built into every APRÍshield™ garment at manufacturing. Combined with lyocell, it creates activewear that stays fresh for longer — and washes out into the environment with the same footprint as forest runoff, not industrial chemicals.
